奈良町の都市形態の全貌は、明治23年(1890)の地籍図である「奈良町実測図」(奈良県立図書館所蔵)を通じて把握される。この都市図を観察すると、辻を起点とした住居集合が形態として抽出された。この十字形からなる町域は、今回の研究によって、中世後期の土地関係史料によっても把握することができた。たとえば、興福寺所蔵「簡聚図絵鈔」所収の「小五月郷絵図写」をみると、「浄土行 東西行南北行」という記載がみられる。この記載形式は、「脇戸行 南北行」という記載と対比される。「脇戸行 南北行」という記載は、脇戸郷とよばれた住居集合が、一本の通りの両側に町屋が建ち並んだ状態を示している。脇戸郷は、いわば「両側町」として理解される住居集合であった。他方、「浄土行 東西行南北行」という記載は、浄土郷が東西軸と南北軸からなる二つの交わった通りの両側に町屋が建ち並んだ状態を示している。この状態は、「両側町」として従来理解されてきた住居集合と鋭く対立する形態として、本研究は理解する。すなわち、辻を起点とする十字形の住居集合が、中世後期奈良において、「両側町」と対立して存在していた。浄土郷にみられるような十字形の小郷は興福寺郷の大半を占めていた点からして単なる例外ではない。この点について、「小五月郷絵図写」の他、中世後期奈良の絵図史料や土地関係史料を通じて、本研究はすでに確認した。このような十字形の集合形態は、奈良と同様に格子状の街路形態をもつ京都と比較する価値があろう。従来、京都は中世後期から近世初頭への転換過程で街路を軸とした「両側町」が広範に成立したと理解されてきた。しかし、「両側町」がどの程度の範囲で成立していたかは現段階で十分に実証されていない。今後、京都と奈良といった、古代に成立した二つの都市が、格子状の街路パターンの上で展開した形態を比較しながら検討することが課題となる。
