研究課題に関して、空間認知に社会的な認識がどのように関わるのかについて実験I、および実験IIの2つの実験が行われた。まず、実験Iでは地図と現地の照合課題において、どのようなランドマークを使用して、自己の位置を同定するのかが、ランドマークに対する社会的知識の観点、及び地図読解者の位置とランドマークの位置との関係の観点から探られた。被験者は短大生であった。実験の結果、地図の読解者にとって、背面に位置するランドマークは使用されにくい傾向があること、同じランドマークでも、読解者のそれに対する社会的意味づけが異なり、このことがランドマークの使用の有無を規定する傾向があること、の2点が明らかになった。更に、追加実験が計画・実施され、両方の要因がランドマークの使用の有無や、それに基づく現地と地図の照合の成否を規定する要因であることが実証された。特に、読解者にとって、それに対する社会的知識が欠如すると、ランドマークは図と地の関係における地になってしまい、空間全体の中に埋没してしまい、手掛りとして使用されないことが示唆された。実験2は、小学生を対象にして、空間内の対象に社会的意味を付与した群と、そうではない群に分け、特定のルートの記憶を比較した。その結果、社会的な意味を付与した群の成績がよく、両群のプロトコール分析やアイム-ブメントの比較でも、空間に社会的な意味を付与した群が目的的探索・記憶行動を内的に行っている傾向が湿された。なお、この実験2のデータは現在、詳細に分析中である。また、実験1については、第36回日本教育心理学会に発表を予定している。
