Among various versions which derived from Steinhowel's collection, Caxton's Early Modern English version is the most important from the standpoint of influence given to later traditions. Coxton's version is not directly descended from Steinhowel's, but from Julien Macho ['s French version. As shown in my survey of the history of studies, Macho's text has escaped totally from scholars' attention so far in spite of its importance. Ot may be due to the fact aht it is not so easy to access to it. Unfortunately Macho's book has not been to accessible to the present writer, but through the examination of its microfilm, he confirmed that Macho's occupies the intermediate position between Steinhowel's and Caxton's. Therefore most of differences found between the latter two are explained by refering to the first. It is planned to publish a facsimile edition of Macho's after getting permission from the possessor.
