まず第一に、進展著しい最近の新技術(New Technology)の動向を、最新の雑誌や文献(日本語・外国語)を購入して調査した。その結果、一口に「新技術」といっても、現場の作業組織・生産現場レベルで導入されるマイクロエレクトロニクス(ME)技術と、管理・統制組織レベルのオフィスで導入される情報通信技術(IT)とはひとまず区別して検討することが必要であることが判明した。第二に、新技術の導入されている各事業所で、どのような組織調整方式が採用されているのかについて、主としてインタビュー調査を中心に調査を行なった。その結果、現場の作業組織レベルにおいては、理論的研究によって概念化していた組織調整方式の3類型のうち、いわゆる「情報共有型」が主に採用されていること、また管理組織レベルにおいては、既存の組織階層を所与とした「誘導型」が採用されていることが多いこと、などが明らかになった。第三に、これらの結果をふまえ、日本の企業組織においては、作業組織レベルでは職務範囲がかなり曖昧化し、逆に管理組織レベルではむしろタイトに従業員の管理を志向しているという事実が明らかとなり、このような両組織レベルでの齟齬がいわゆる「日本的経営」と称される経営方式の一特徴であることが、結論的に判明した。また第四に、欧米の経営管理システムにおいてはトレード・オフ関係として把握されている「従業員の職務内容の改善・向上」と「管理者による彼らへの管理可能性」の2因子の関係が、必ずしも背反関係にはなく、むしろ比例関係に近い状況にあることも、新たな発見事実として同時に明らかになった。
