1.都市空間の変貌と市民生活の分化メカニズムに関する理論的研究まず,都市という空間のなかで社会階級・階層の分化と配置,それらと人びとの生活との関連を考察するための理論と方法,およびその意義について検討を進めた。その結果,二つの理論的課題が抽出された。第一は,「構造と過程」に関する定式の問題である.第二に,消費と社会階級・階層の関連である。この二点の検討を通じて,人びとの社会的分化が社会階級・階層や消費を含む複合的な過程であり,そこには空間の社会的分化,中央・地方政府当局の介入,さらにはポスト産業化のトレンドの中で流動性を高める資本制メカニズムなどまでが直接的に関与しているという認識が得られた。2.計画的な市街開発と住民のライフスタイルの分化上記の理論枠組のうち,空間の社会的分化と人びとの社会生活の関連について,千葉県浦安市をフィールドとする住民の社会参加活動に関するアンケート調査を実施した。その結果,計画的に開発され,分譲された海側の新興一戸建て住宅街および集合住宅団地の居住者と,既成市街地の住民との間で,顕著なライフスタイルの差異が見出された。夫婦の学歴,職業,共働き率,世帯収入,地域の団体・サークル活動参加,などにおいて両者はかなり明確に分離し,新興住宅地区の居住者は大半が上級ホワイトカラー的階層によって占められている。ベイエリアの埋め立てと開発は,国,千葉県,住宅公団,浦安市などの公共機関や大手不動産デベロッパーの長期ヴィジョンにもとづいて遂行されており,整備された住宅の入居者の明示的な選別は存在しない。それにもかかわらずこのような居住分化が進むメカニズムを理解するためには,単なる経済的説明のみではなく,よりライフスタイルや価値観などに内在する分析が必要であることが明らかになった。
