本研究は南満州鉄道(以下「満鉄」)に設けられた建築組織について、その設立過程・変遷・所属技術者の概要と建築組織の活動内容の概要を文献調査および聞き取り調査によって明らかにした。1.文献調査より明らかになったこと(1)1909〜40年にかけてほぼ毎年満鉄が編集発行した『職員録』『社員録』(国立国会図書館およびアジア経済研究所所蔵)を基に「満鉄建築技術者リスト」を作成した。これにより、満鉄の建築技術者の大半は日本人であり、また全国的に技術者が採用されていたが判明した。(2)満鉄編集発行の各社史(十年史、第二次十年史、第三次十年史、第四次十年史)および満鉄発行『職員録』『社員録』、満鉄発行『社報』によって建築組織の変遷を明らかにした。満鉄の建築組織は全体を統括する本社建築課の他に工事監理を担当する多数の組織が存在し、技術者は人事異動によってこれら多数の建築組織を移動した。(3)上記資料と日本語新聞『満州日報』(奉天)、『満州日々新聞』(大連)、『大新京日報』(新京・長春)により特に満鉄草創期と満州事変直後の満鉄の建築組織の活動の概要を把握した。満鉄は単なる鉄道会社ではなく、鉄道附属地の行政や大連港の建設・経営など多種多様な事業を行ったが、建築組織もそれに対応して鉄道施設だけでなく、行政施設・学校・病院・図書館・ホテル・鉱山施設・港湾施設など多種多様な建築を設計した。従って満鉄の建築組織は単なる鉄道会社の建築組織ではなく官庁営繕組織と民間建築組織の性格を合わせ持った組織であった。2.聞き取り調査より明らかになったこと(1)関係者の証言によれば満鉄の建築組織は常に新たな設計を行っていた。ホテル併設駅舎(奉天駅)、低層集合住宅(近江町住宅)、中層集合住宅(関東館・南山寮)、大規模総合病院(大連医院)、寒冷地の結核療養所(南満州保養院)、最新の乗船設備を持った埠頭施設(大連港先客待合所)などは、いずれも日本国内の建築に比べて先進的であり、世界の最先端をゆく施設も存在した。(2)関係者の証言によれば、満鉄の建築組織では経験豊富な技術者経験の浅い技術者を実務を通して教育する体制が整えられており、世代交替を円滑に行なって設計水準の低下を防いでいた。以上の内容を取り纏めて学術論文「南満州鉄道株式会社の建築家」を『アジア経済』に発表した。
