本研究は20世紀前半の東アジア地域に建てられた在外公館建築について、それらの建設経緯や設計・施工者をはじめとした基本的情報を収集し、在外公館建築が持つ政治的社会的意味を解明し、東アジアの近代建築における在外公館建築の位置付けを行ない、以下の点が明らかになった。(1)外務省外交史料館所蔵の外交文書を基本資料として、「在外公館建築リスト」を作成した。これによって東アジア地域の在外公館建築が日露戦争直後の約10年間の建物を新築していったことが判明した。(2)外交文書を詳細に分析した結果、独自の建築組織を持たなかった外務省は、絶えず民間の建築家にその設計監理を依頼していたことが判明した。例えば、清国駐在日本公使館(3代目)は当時天津日本租界で活動していた真水英夫に設計が依頼されている他、奉天駐在日本総領事館など中国東北地方の在外公館の多くは三橋四郎に設計監理が依頼されていた。また、斉南日本領事館は当時神戸で建築事務所を開設していた河合浩蔵に、上海日本総領事館は当時上海在住の建築家平野勇造に設計監理が依頼されている。(3)日露戦争直後に新築された在外公館は多いが、それらはいずれも他の列強の在外公館が新築した後、日本の在外公館のみがみすぼらしい建物を使っていることが多く、国家の出先機関の建物としては不適切な建物と認識され、新築が急がれたことが判明した。(4)在外公館建築の持つ政治的・社会的意味について、在外公館が国家の出先機関として、体面を保つためには、建物も相応の存在でなければならないことが判明した。(5)在外公館建築は、一見特異な存在のように思われがちであるが、国家の出先機関として体面を維持するため、それに見合った設計が行なわれた。例えば、上海総領事館は建物の正面を街路に向けることなく、水運の発達した黄浦江に向けて建てられた。また、奉天総領事館は比較的派手な辰野式の外観であり、周囲に次々と新築された列強の在外公館よりも目立つ存在となった。このように在外公館建築は、それぞれの土地において、日本という国家権力を代弁する存在であった。なお、以上をとりまとめて、学術論文「東アジアの在外公館建築」を『日本建築学会計画系論文集』に発表する予定にしている。
