本研究の目的は、生命倫理学bioethicsにおける功利主義アプローチの有効性を検証しつつ、同時にその限界を見定めることにあった。そのために功利主義倫理学全般の研究と生命倫理学の研究を並行して行い、生命倫理学の具体的な場面において功利主義倫理学がどのように応用され、どのような問題点をはらみうるかを検討した。具体的な生命倫理学の題材としては、先天的障害の遺伝子診断というミクロな問題を主に取り上げた。なかでも《先天的障害をもった子を身ごもった場合は、障害のためあまり幸福とはいえない人生を歩む子をそのまま産むよりも、その子は胎児ないし新生児の段階で死なせて、代わりに幸福な人生が見込まれる健常な子を産み直したほうが、全体としての幸福量が増大するので望ましい》という「置き換え可能性replaceability」の議論を、功利主義倫理学がいかに正当化しているかを分析した。その結果、「置き換え可能性」の議論は、第一に障害者は健常者よりも不幸に違いないという偏見に基づいていること、第二に胎児や新生児という非人格的存在だけではなく人格的存在にまで適用される危険性を含んでいること、第三に可能的人格と潜在的人格の効用計算上の差異を過小評価していること、などが明らかになり、功利主義は具体的な生命倫理学の場面においては厳密な効用計算を行いえないことが判明しつつある。ただし、本年度は上記のミクロな場面に考察を集中させたため、研究計画に掲げた、人口問題というマクロな場面における功利主義アプローチの検討は十分に行うことができなかった。「置き換え可能性」の議論はこのマクロな場面においても提示されており、今後は生命倫理学のミクロな題材とマクロな題材の両方において、さらに功利主義アプローチの検討をつづけていく計画である。

Utilitarianism is not specific to the situation of bioethics. It is not accurate to use calculation. This year's report focuses on research projects, population issues, utilitarianism, and discussion. The discussion of "the possibility of change" is not only the scene of change, but also the theme of bioethics in the future.
