项目摘要

平成29年度は、近代デモクラシー論の観点から、J. S.ミルの政治思想の再構成を試みた。平成28年度に明らかにしたミルの古典古代論と卓越主義のリベラリズムの関係について、「デモクラシー時代の到来」という19世紀的文脈から再検討を行った結果、彼の政治思想における自由とデモクラシーの緊張関係が浮き彫りになった。その際、これまでの研究において中心的に取り扱ってきたミルの著作『自由論』（1859年）や『功利主義』（1861年）だけでなく、『代議制統治論』（1861年）の議論についても分析対象に加えた。研究手法としては、テクスト読解に加えて同時代人たちとの論争を取り上げることで、歴史的コンテクストに即した方法論を意識的に行なった。以上の研究内容に関する本年度の主要な研究成果は、博士学位論文（「ジョン・スチュアート・ミルとデモクラシーへの問い―古典古代、功利、自由」）の完成と博士号（政治学）の取得であった。本論文では、功利主義、リベラリズム、共和主義というミルの政治思想の理論的特徴を、デモクラシー論の視点から捉え直した。その際、ミルのデモクラシー論について、ミル研究において古典的なテーマである功利や自由のみならず、古典古代論という近年の英米圏におけるミル研究の動向を反映した論点を取り上げた。その後、報告者は、ミル研究の「新しい資料」の分析・収集に着手した。「新しい資料」とは、オックスフォード大学サマーヴィルカレッジ所蔵のThe John Stuart Mill Collectionである。当コレクションには、ミルが長年研究目的に活用していた蔵書が約1700冊あり、これらの蔵書には、ミルによる多数の書き込みが確認された。新たな研究資料として位置付けられる当コレクションでの資料収集・情報収集・研究交流を2018年3月に実施し、ミルのデモクラシー論の形成過程に関する分析を開始した。
