1.成員を判別する知識としての「成員資格(Membership)」とは、個々の行為に関する知識ではなく、行為の帰結を相互に帰属し合う権利と義務に関する知識、換言すれば、「同一の責任概念の適用範囲」を指示する知識と規定できる。この知識こそが、個々人の行為を、「一員としての行為」として自他に認識させる。2.こうした観点から、「集団の境界」とは、行為規範の共有によってではなく、行為責任の帰属関係によって形成されるものと定式化できる。こうした定式化によって、個々人の行為の類似性にもかかわらず別な集団が形成され、逆に個々人の行為に差異がありながら一つの集団が形成されるといった所以がよりよく理解される。つまり、成員資格の概念の明確化によって、集団を個々人の実体的な集合状態と識別する理論的基礎が得られた。3.以上の理論的考察から、成員資格の獲得と剥奪過程は、成員資格を支える責任概念の性格に規定されるという仮説を設定し、こうした観点から従来の集団類型論を読み変え、責任観念を類別する二軸を折出した。一つは、責任の適用範囲が「人に依拠するか/行為に依拠するか」という〈帰属対象の軸〉であり、もう一つは、責任の内容が「体験的・黙示的に指示されるか/文書的・明示的に指示されるか」という〈伝達様式の軸〉である。この二軸の組合わせから、成員資格の四類型を構成し、その獲得と剥奪過程をモノグラフで検討した。4.成員資格の獲得と剥奪過程は、責任観念が「黙視的伝達様式による人への帰属」という性格をもつ場合にも最も困難(閉鎖的)となり、「明示的伝達様式による行為への帰属」という正確をもつ場合に最も容易(開放的)となる。又、連帯責任の観念の喪失とともに集団は相互行為の集積体へと変異すると推定された。このように、成員資格による集団の動態分析への知識社会学的な理論的基礎としての、責任観念の存在を折出することができた。
