Synthetic research on the Correspondance of Proust based on investigation of proper nouns

The purpose of this research is to reveal how the Marcel Proust's life and writing process were reflected by social and cultural conditions in those days. The study is focused on proper nouns which appear in the Correspondance of Marcel Proust (Correspondance de Marcel Proust, 21 vols, ed. Philip Kolb, Plon, 1970-1993). The research, being taken two years from 1996 to 1997, is summarized as follows :(1)In order to analyze how the information in the Correspondance reflects social and cultural conditions, we collected and investigated the newspapers and magazines which Proust read or might have read.(2)The members of this research, the representative, researchers and collaborators (altogether approximately 40 members), covered all-inclusive study of the proper nouns which appear in the Correspondance (9,500 pages). The proper nouns are classified into three categories : persons, places and publications. On the process of proofreading, we supplimented additional information ; for example, the following items were added as personal information, such as maiden names, titles of nobility, dates of birth and death, blood relatives, occupations and social positions. Thus, the General Index of the Correspondance of Proust bas been completed and published as a report of our research. This General Index may offer various information which may help the readers to realize Proust's life, social and cultural background in his days, including Proust's own interest in what kind of books, papers and periodicals he read and might have read ; whatpoint of view on politics he had and what kind of art he appreciated. The General Index may contribute, in advance of other Proust scholars in the world, the readers who may do further research and study with this work.(3)The analysis of social and cultural information which appear in the Correspondance by consulting the General Index has Just started excepr individual research papers.
