Transplantation of cervical sympathetic ganglion into the brain with Parkinson's disease

We have investigated the effect of transplantation of autologous sympathetic ganglion into the brain with Parkinson's disease. Base on encouraging data obtained from experimental studies, we have clincally applied this new therapeutic modality for 50 patients with Parkinson's disease. In this project we have demonstrated that free radical interfered the survival of the graft and free radical inhibitor enhanced survival rate and functional recovery of transplanted animals. In the clinical study, we have revealed that half the patients showed amelioration of gait and movement in the patients for 5-6 years after transplantation. In contrast, the rest of half patients did not show improvement of the symptoms even after the transplantation. Influencing factors for outcome of the patients were duration of the disease and severity of symptoms. The present stud suggests that administration of free radical inhibitors may enhance the effects of sympathetic ganglion of parkinsonian symptoms.
