The Objective of this research is to clarify how modern universities in Asian countries were transplanted under the process of modernization provoked by western impact. This study is done form a comparative and historical viewpoint based on Eric Ashby's well known book, "universities". In other word Asian universities were analyzed in terms of transplantation of 'university model'. The modern university model is broadly into three categories such as (1) British model with elitism, (2) German model with research emphasis, (3) American model with mass higher education and professional graduate school. As Asian universities were established under the strong influence of suzerainty of western countries and their colonial legacy, all of them were very influenced from above mentioned three models. Even Japan and Thailand which were not colonized by western countries they accepted western university model independently in the latter half of the nineteen century. In the twenty century many Asian universities were established under great influence of American model by the independent nation states after the World War II.

本研究旨在厘清亚洲国家的现代大学是如何在西方冲击引发的现代化进程中被移植的。本研究以艾瑞克·阿什比的名著《大学》为基础，从比较和历史的角度进行研究。换言之，亚洲大学是从移植“大学模式”的角度来分析的。现代大学模式大致可分为三类：(1)精英主义的英国模式；(2)注重研究的德国模式；(3)高等教育大众化和专业研究生院的美国模式。由于亚洲大学是在西方宗主性和殖民遗产的强烈影响下建立起来的，所以它们都受到了上述三种模式的很大影响。即使是没有被西方国家殖民的日本和泰国，也在19世纪下半叶独立接受了西方的大学模式。20世纪，在美国模式的影响下，许多亚洲大学在二战后被独立的民族国家建立起来。
