Self-stationing motive is defined to be a need to find oneself being located in an appropriate place in referent groups. This motive gives a basis for field dependent nature of the Japanese. We have found that cognitive dissonance appears strongly when a difference of opinion or taste with ingroup members is revealed. And when one's status reveals to be lower than he/she had expected, strong sense of uncertainty of selfhood occurs in mind, and various coping behavior follows. For example, Japanese students with higher uncertainty of selfhood try to compare more with the highest achievers rather than low-achievers. These results are concluded to reflect self stationing motive among the Japanese people.

自我定位动机被定义为发现自己在所指群体中处于适当位置的需要。这一动机为日本人的场依存性奠定了基础。我们发现，当与群体内成员的观点或品味出现差异时，认知失调就会强烈出现。而当一个人的地位低于他/她的预期时，心理上会产生强烈的自我不确定感，并随之产生各种应对行为。例如，自我不确定性较高的日本学生更倾向于与成绩最好的学生进行比较，而不是与成绩较差的学生进行比较。这些结果反映了日本人的自我安置动机。
