A Study of Chinese-Korean Mutual Recognition Through Korean Envoy Accounts of Missions to Beijing

This research report contains two papers. "Explanatory Notes on Choson Yonhaengnok [Korean Envoy Accounts of Missions to Beijing] extant in Japan, and "Korean Envoy Accounts of Missions to Beijing and Japanese Studies"."Explanatory Notes on Choson Yonhaengnok [Korean Envoy Accounts of Missions to Beijing ] extant in Japan" details the surveys I made to compile my study Korean Envoy Accounts of Missions to Beijing extant in japan, moves on to a discussion of the author and date of composition of each Accounts, and concludes with brief autobiographies of the authors and notes on their tribute journeys. The survey introduces researchers for the first time to all Accounts extant in Japan, and provides them with the information necessary to assess their contents. The thirty-three Accounts I introduce are all in manuscript format Twenty-seven are believed to be unique copies, as no alternative versions are known to exist in libraries outside Japan, while the other five were preserved in their authors' own collections . It is hoped that this report will build on the foundations established by A Compilation of Korean Envoy Accounts of Missions to Beijing (co-edited with the South Korean scholar Lin Ki-zung), and will be a useful resource for scholars around the world interested in researching Korean tribute missions to Beijing and Chinese-Korean mutual recognition contacts generally."Korean Envoy Accounts of Missions to Beijing and Japanese Studies" was a paper presented in the international conference and East Asian Studies held in South Korea in December 2001. The paper exposed the misconceptions that exist in current research on Korean envoys to Japan, and by comparing their experience with that of Korean envoys to Peking in the first half of the nineteenth century illuminated the contrast between the poor relations between Japan and Korea and the close relationship existing between China and Korea at this period.
