本研究は中国の清朝末期から民国期における伝統的商業組織とそのダイナミックな地域的拡大を追い、そこに見出される地域的システムを分析することにより、今日の中国の商業的地域システムの底辺、基盤を解明しようとするところに目的がある。中国の清朝末期の商業組織を担った商人たちは、江戸時代の日本と同様に「士農工商」として社会階層の最下層に置かれ、彼らには国など行政から何の保護もなく、日本以上に厳しい環境に置かれていた。そのため、元来の商業地はもちろん、他地域へ進出する際も、他の住民や集団・賊などによる敵対行為から身や組織を守るために同郷組織を形成した。その代表が「会館」と「公所」であり、省によっては他の名称もみられた。そのうち、「会館」は同郷出身の商人達の相互扶助組織で、異郷で亡くなった商人を出身地の同郷へ送り返すほどの強い組織力をもった。また、「公所」は同郷出身の同一業種の商人達のつくる組織で、西欧中世の職人集団ギルド制と類似するところもあった。この両組織は商業活動の拡大で、他省へ進出立地する時に、このような組織を進出都市に結成し、そこを核として、さらに外地へ拡大するときの拠点にもした。その際、同郷出身者同士の信頼のために、自律的で道義的内容の「章程」をつくり、商業活動上の公平性と信用性を確保した。第1年目の研究成果は、このような組織の存在を、清国との貿易実務者養成をめざした東亜同文書院（1901上海設立）の構想をめざした荒尾精が『清国通商綜覧』で日本へ初めて紹介し、それに刺激されて東亜同文書院生の各地への踏査調査旅行でその調査を行った初期のデータから清国末期は、まだ上海が頂点ではなく、漢口が各省各地の商業組織が目指した進出都市目標であることを示した。このような調査研究は、清末・民国期の中国では行なわれておらず、日本側（前述荒尾と書院生）および一部のヨーロッパが注目したにすぎなかった。
