项目摘要

近年のRNA研究の大きな発展を支えた背景には、国内のRNAの基礎研究に関して10年余の間継続して実施されてきたRNAに関係する重点・特定領域研究が果たした役割が大きい。このようなRNA研究に対する熱意は、特に若い研究者の間に大きなうねりとなって現れ、平成11年に日本RNA学会が組織された(初代会長:志村令郎・生物分子工学研究所長)。本基盤研究(C)においては、「RNA研究の21世紀への展開」のために推進すべき課題についての調査と討論を重ね、平成13年度発足特定領域研究(A)「RNA情報発現系の時空間ネットワーク」を申請するに至った。その過程で、本基盤研究(C)に参加し、同時に新特定領域研究の総括班に予定するメンバーは、平成12年に開催されたRNA関連の国際研究集会「tRNA Workshop」(4月、ケンブリッジ)、「RNA Society年会」(5月、マジソン)、FASEBシンポジウム「Posttranscriptional Control of Gene Expression:The Role of RNA」(7月、コロラド)、「Ribosome Biogenesis」(8月、タホ)、「Structural Aspects of Protein Synthesis」(9月、アルバニ)に参加し、最新情報の調査・討論を行った。これらの調査討論に基づき新特定領域研究の申請を準備するとともに、平成13年2月には、国外から12名の研究者を招聘して国際シンポジウム「Post-Genome World of RNA」(開催責任者:東京大学医科学研究所教授中村義一)を東京で開催し、本研究領域に関する最新の発表・討論を実施した。
