これまで、エリクソンの自我論およびライフサイクル論における相互性の概念に着目して、教育者(大人)と被教育者(子ども)の二者関係について考察を試みてきたが、理論的射程を二者関係よりも広く想定することが必要であると考え、そのために、以下の理論研究と参与観察を行った。・理論的基礎研究として、1950年から60年代前半にかけて、エリクソンの理論構築の変遷とジェネレイティヴィティ概念の形成過程を整理した。エリクソンは、著作活動をはじめた1950年以降、とりわけ母子の二者関係において大人と子どもの相互性をとらえ、そのことは彼がジェネレイティヴィティ概念を形成した基盤となったが、しかしまた、60年代になって、世代サイクルというパースペクティヴの導入に伴い、社会様式や儀礼についても積極的に言及している。そうした経緯において、ジェネレイティヴィティ概念の意味内容については、社会進化論的な傾向や優生学的傾向が強められていったことが明らかになった。(「E.H.エリクソンのジェネレイティヴィティ概念に関する考察-1950年代と60年代前半の見解の変化を中心に-」『大阪大学教育学年報』第9号2004)・交錯する関係性におけるジェネレイティヴィティの現象をとらえるべく、高等教育実践の場において、コメンテーターを導入し、参与観察を行った。授業者(教育者)、学生(被教育者)、コメンテーター(仲介者)の三者関係の中で、コメンテーターは、学生に対し、授業者や授業の方向性について積極的な意思表明をするよう促す重要な役割となったが、同時に、授業者に対して、常に学生との関係のあり方や授業の方向性に対して反省を促すものともなった。その際、授業者には、とくに、担当授業をカリキュラム全体の中でとらえる視点の重要性、とりわけ他の科目との関連性や独自性の明示化、学生にとっての意義の明確化が求められた。すなわち、月の前の教育関係を閉じられた二者関係で深めてゆくのではなく、より広い文脈において関係と場の意味をとらえ学生に向けて発信してゆくことが、授業者の力量として求められたのであった。コメンテーターは、授業者と学生を仲介し、双方に新たな気づきや学びをもたらした。そして、授業者は、授業者自身がより広い社会的、学問的文脈と学生個人とを結びつける仲介者になることを現実的な課題として発見した。こうした参与観察から得られた結論は、ジェネレイティヴィティを仲介者の発する力として捉えていく視点の重要性であったといえよう。
