2002年7月にロンドンで開催された「前オスマン史およびオスマン帝国史国際学会シンポジウム」に参加し,19世紀オスマン帝国におけるウラマー層の変容に関してイスラム法廷裁判官制度の再編成を中心に報告を行なった。この報告では,オスマン帝国の文書史料に基づき,本来カーディーの代理であった「ナーイブ」が正式なイスラム法官として制度化される過程を,帝国の地方行政制度の改革という文脈と,ウラマー層内部・政府内部の対立関係という文脈に位置づけて明らかにした。トルコを始め,米国,フランス,イスラエルなどからオスマン帝国史の専門家が集まって開かれたこのシンポジウムでは,様々な最新の研究成果を聞き,また,各国の研究者と意見交換をすることができた。ロンドンでは,英国図書館と英国公文書館に通い,オスマン帝国近代史関係資料を調査した。その後パリに寄り,国立図書館で主に刊行資料の調査を行なった。パリの後トルコに渡り,イスタンブルの総理府オスマン古文書館,ムフティー局付属古文書館にて主にイスラム法廷に関する文書史料の収集に当たり,また現地の書店からオスマン帝国近代史関係の書籍を購入した。前年度に引き続き,イスラム法廷裁判官の養成機関である「ナーイブ学院」に関する研究を進め,英文で作成した論文は,フランスのTurcica誌での掲載が決定した。また,イスラム法官のデータベースに基づき,アラプ地域出身のイスラム法官に関して分析を行ない,都市の名士層の社会移動やオスマン帝国への統合に関する諸問題を検討した。これらの研究を通じて,オスマン帝国近代の国家機構の再編成のメカニズムを解明するとともに,帝国各地の多様な地域における多様な形態の社会移動や社会変容を明らかにすることができた。
