Japanese cities in the modern age have developed with the industrialization lead by the national government and the introduction of modern trans portation systems based on the western technology. Transportation systems such as railroad, port, canal etc. contributed to the structural changes of these cities. Nagoya, the third large metropolis in Japan, was connected with other large cities, Tokyo and Osaka, by the completion of Tokaido line. Nagoya station, the main railroad station of this region, was located at the suburb west to the city center considering the transfer convenience of passengers. Afterward, this station has played an important part as the main origin and destination of inter-urban transportation, and has attract ed much kind of business, transportation, retail and service activities around it.Because of the physical condition, there was only a small port near Nagoya. The construction of modem port for Nagoya was planned to devel op the industrial activities that were … More mainly export-oriented. After the completion of Nagoya port, the products manufactured in the traditional industrial sectors have exported to the world. The production in the modern industrial sectors, achinery, chemical, metal, have been accelerated by the improvement of the export function. Port facilities have increased in number with the industrial development of the hinterland. In addition, the transportation means connecting the port with the inland area have been established to strengthen the connectivity. The road network system established before the Meiji Restoration has gradually transformed to the new one that covered Nagoya and its environs. The basic routes of these roads have not changed, but the transportation capacity has greatly upgraded in quality and quantity. With this change, the urban evelopment of Nagoya has expanded further, and its influence has attained to the country area. The introduction of automobile, bus, taxi and so on has contributed to the socio-economic changes of this region, and the cities and towns around Nagoya have increased their industrial special ization. A quasi-metropolitan region has emerged with the development of the transportation system including not only road but also railroad, port, canal and so on. Less
