2003年8月にDavisは、日本哲学の解釈学的な意義についての論文「退歩と邂逅-西洋哲学から思索的対話へ」を公表した(『日本哲学史研究』第一号36-66頁)。その後Davisは、ニヒリズムにおける意志の問題をめぐるニーチェと仏教、またニーチェと西谷啓治の関係を研究し、"Zen after Zarathustra : The Problem of the Will in the Confrontation between Nietzsche and Buddhism" (Journal for Nietzsche Studiesに掲載予定)および「神の死から意志の大死へ-ポスト・ニーチェの哲学者としての西谷啓治」(『世界のなかの日本の哲学』に掲載予定)を執筆し、ならびに、"The Step Back through Nihilism : The Radical Orientation of Nishitani Keiji's Philosophy of Zen" (Synthesis Philosophicaに掲載予定)および「神はどこまで自己を空ずるか-阿部正雄のケノーシス論をめぐる議論」(『世界のなかの日本の哲学』に掲載予定)を執筆した。10月に京都哲学研究会で「上田閑照氏の非神秘主義論について」という発表を行った。12月末に米国Washington DCで行なわれたThe American Philosophical Associationの学会において西洋哲学と日本哲学についての討論に参加し、その後HoustonのRice Universityにて資料収集を行った。また、2004年2月には米国Maryland州のSt.Mary's CollegeおよびLoyola Collegeを訪問し、禅と日本哲学についての発表を行った。
