Dissatisfaction with facial appearance and personality in orthognathic surgical patients with mandibular prognathism

AIM: The aim was to assess the pre- and post-treatment dissatisfaction with facial appearance and personality in patients* *rognathism.SUBJECTS and METHODS: Patient group consisted of 76 surgical patients with mandibular prognathism (21.8 years of mean age)* *rol group consisted or 128 university students without facial discrepancy (20.8 years of mean age). The dissatisfaction with fa* *was evaluated by a self-rating 11-point score and the personality was evaluated using MMPI. These two evaluations were compared * *wo groups. Moreover, in Patient group, correlations between dissatisfaction with facial appearance and several predicting varia* *erity of mandibular prognathism, gender, age, and psychological profile were studied. Over 1 year after treatment, the same stu* *d for 48 individuals in Patient group.RESULTS: 1. Before treatment. 1) Most of patients had severe facial dissatisfaction, especially about the lower face and * *he mean dissatisfaction score was 7.2 in Patient group, and 4.2 in Control group. 2) Z scores in Pd, Pt and Ma scales were sign* *nd those in Hs and Hy scales were significantly smaller in Patient group. 3) In the Patient group, dissatisfaction was larger I* *nd showed significant positive correlations with Z scores at D, Pd, and Pa scales, but showed no significant correlation with s* *ar prognathism.2. After treatment. 1) Facial dissatisfaction decreased to 3.2 in the Patient group. 2) Z scores at D and Pd scales were als* *ased in the Patient group. 3) Facial dissatisfaction after treatment showed significant positive correlations with dissatisfact * *nd Z scores at D and Pd scales.CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the facial dissatisfaction before treatment, depression and maladjustment to the s* * and after treatment had relevance to dissatisfaction after treatment.
