We have established a systematic procedure to carry out chronological ordering of given Japanese ancient tomb mounds based on the defined four dimensions of the mound, which include length of the mound, diameter of the round back, width of the neck-like part and width of the square front. In practice we have tentatively designed a dating chart for dating a tomb mound and have experimentally tried to use it for dating a small number of ancient tomb mounds. On the other hand, we still are a long way from establishing a complete procedure to estimate an original 3-dimensional shape of a tomb mound. The reason is that there are a number of existing tomb mounds which are slightly different in detail even though their shapes are same in terms of the defined dimensions. This problem is associated with what an individual is. Then we have theoretically discussed a relation between a group of similar individuals and each individual, establishing a basic way to handle an individual shape of the tomb mound by information processing. Finally, we have made academic inspections on European universities where similar projects are going on: We have found it important that chronological ordering and graphical restoration of artifacts should be closely related to effective use of archaeological and geographical databases.
