本研究は、具体的な目標として:1)資料収集・海外の研究者と討論を行うこと;2)更には、幾つかの詳細な事例研究に基づく社会構造史的な見通し、を示す論文をまとめること、この二点を掲げた。平成14年度分について、その概要を記す。先ず資料収集については、本年度はアメリカ合衆国スタンフォード大学Hoover Institutionにおいて、East Asian Collection特に、香港新界の民間文書資料を集積したJames Hayes Collection及び台湾の民間文書・植民地行政文書を集めた「台湾公私蔵古文書彙編」を中心にぐ調査・分析を行った。海外の研究者との討論については、特に年度内二度のアメリカ合衆国出張においてこれを行った。その際スタンフォード大学のRamon Myers教授・コロンビア大学Myron Cohen教授等と討論し、本研究計画及び上記「台湾公私蔵古文書彙編」に関して得た知見を報告した。結果、200304年に香港中文大学及びスタンフォード大学が主催する学会において、"Institutional change in property rights and its dynamism in late Qing China"(清末中国における財産的諸権利に関わる制度的変容及びその動態)についての報告者としての招待を得た。論文発表については、スタンフォードで分析した台湾関係資料の知見を組みこむことで当初の予定以上に射程の長い議論が可能となる(特定の土地について19世紀初頭から20世紀前半に至るまでの長期間にわたる保有・取引の記録を跡付け得る外、更には植民地化前後を通じた取引実務の変化が看取される)と考えられ、その背景たる香港・台湾における植民地法制及び社会変動の諸過程に関する比較研究を付け加える必要が生じている。このため、実際の公表は次年度に持ち越しとなっている。
