延慶本『平家物語』について、唱導(説経)資料を通した研究を行った。特に、延慶本に多く挿入されている寺院関係記事について、これが盛り込まれた社会的・宗教的背景を考察した。その結果、十三世紀から十四世紀に頻発した寺院間の相論(訴訟)が背景にあることが分かった。相論に当たっては、訴えの内容を述べた「申状」「奏状」「事書」などが作成された。この時、大寺院は、多くの証拠文書を朝廷に提出するだけでなく、裁判を優位に進めるために、自らの主張の補強材料となるような物語や説話を積極的に喧伝するようになった。また、これらの訴訟文書を作成し、物語や説話を喧伝する際には、平安時代後期より隆盛を極めた唱導の成果が取り入れられていることを明らかにできた。すなわち、唱導活動においては、縁起・説話・物語などが用いられ、自らの寺社の霊験を顕揚する対句仕立ての美文が作成されたが、これらの成果が訴訟関係文書作成に用いられているのである。具体的には、延慶本『平家物語』巻六における白河院高野御幸説話が成立した背景に、十三世紀初頭の東寺と延暦寺との諡号相論があることを明らかにした。延慶本の高野御幸説話は、院政期・鎌倉時代の唱導を継承しつつ、鎌倉時代末期の東寺を中心とする真言宗興隆運動の中で整備されたものである。また、延慶本『平家物語』巻五における南都炎上記事は、平安時代末、平重衡によって焼討ちされた南都を復興するために行われた重源や弁暁の唱導活動を背景にして生まれた言説をもとにしていることを明らかにした。さらに、『平家物語』は寺院から発信された歴史認識の枠組みを用いて歴史叙述を立ち上げていること、また、寺院間の対立の影響を受けて変容した箇所があることも明らかにできた。
