This project aimed at promoting science and technology with investigating digital methods for building and presenting technology archives. This project was performed by NII (National Institute of Informatics) in cooperation with five Japanese academic societies related to electrical, electronic, and information engineering fields, namely, ITE (The Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers), IPSJ (Information Processing Society of Japan), IEIJ (The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan), IEEJ (The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan), and IEICE (The Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers). Cooperation between NII and these societies had been helpful to accomplish practical and concrete research results, since these five societies were building a database called "DB-JET (Database on Japanese Excellent Technologies of Electric, Electronic and Information Area)" with the support of "Grant-in-Aid for Publication of Scientific Research Results". The results achieved by this project include (1)detailed design of a database schema for archiving technologies, (2)formulating a practical methodology for assigning keywords, (3)establishing a framework for copyright management, (4)designing and prototyping a Web interface for technology archives, (5)comprehensive investigation of related activities in USA and Europe. The digital archive investigated by this project is useful not only for understanding the technological innovations in Japan but also for devising R&D strategies and for formulating science and technology policies. In addition, the designed archive provides four types of descriptions for each technology ; (1)for professional in Japanese, (2)for professional in English, (3)for junior in Japanese, and (4)for junior in English. This framework contributes toward promoting science and technology with assisting both Japanese and foreign people to understand the history of technology in Japan.
(The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan)、IEEJ(The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan)和IEICE(The Institute of Electronics,Information, and Communication Engineers)。
