Characterization of the "Burma Gazetteer Database" We discussed on the content and format of the database, and resources used in it.Collecting dataBased on the above discussion, we executed the collection of data both home and abroad. The data we collected are : British Burma Gazetteer, 1880, compiled in coronial period, and its Japanese translation, Biruma Chimei-Yoran (Directory of Toponyms in Burma), Toa Kenkyujo (East Asia Institute), 1943 ; Current Administration of Different States and Division (up to township, district, village level) (in Burmese), 14 vols., Rangoon, Ministry of Religious and Home Affairs, 1974 ; Current Administration of Different States and Division (up to township, district, village level) (in Burmese), 14 vols., Yangon, Ministry of Home Affairs, 2003 ; Record of States and Division (in Burmese), 19 vols., Rangoon, BSPP Central Committee, 1985.Entering and correcting dataWe entered and corrected both old and new data compiled by Ministry of (Rerigious and) Home Affairs. As for three divisions regarded as most important among Burmese-inhabited area, i.e., Yangon, Bago and Mandalay divisions, we collated them and investigated the creation, abolishment and renaming of administrative units. We also entered the longitudes/latitudes of about 20,000 points in the whole country, and parts of Records of Yangon and Mandalay divisions.Notation of languagesWe determined the transliteration of Burmese language in electronic data, and investigated the method of collating place names spelt in Burmese script and those spelt in roman alphabet conventionally. Also, notation for minolity languages such as Mon and Jinghpaw was explored.
