近代変動期における沖縄の一集落系移動民を対象にした長期的フィールド研究の成果は、出身地域での重層的な共同性を基礎に移動先の状況に適合するような繋がりの形をあらたに編み出してきた人々の姿を伝えている。本研究では、「共同体の再編」という観点から沖縄内外の移動と定着の過程を位置づけ、大阪、那覇、ハワイ等をフィールドにした調査を継続させた。研究計画の最終年度にあたる今年度は、戦後に沖縄本島内で起こった各集落から都市への移動にふたたび焦点をあわせ、なかでも那覇の新天地市場という衣料品総合卸市場の形成および展開過程を集中的に考察することに力を注いだ。現地調奪は、2005年8月〜9月および2006年3月の2度の計3度に分けて実施した。市場での参与観察および体験者たちが語るライフストーリーの考察からは、類似性と多様性という特徴が指摘できた。市場共同体にみられるこれらの特徴は成員たちの間にみられる以下の共通性を母胎とする。(1)同世代性(1950〜1960年代の市場形成期に20〜30代だった女性たちがほとんどで、出産・子育てに至る時間的展望を共にしていた)、(2)類似の境遇(戦争=喪失体験を経て、終戦後に生活の糧を求めて各集落から都市へと芋づる式の移動を体験した)、(3)等分の空間に並列と接触の身体配列(各自が等分の商い空間を分け合い、自前の縫製品を前に置き身を摺り合わせるなかで商いをした)。これら3つの条件が、成員間に相互行為の伝播・伝染しやすさを用意したといえる。後続者たちは市場内の先行者をモデルとして「ならい(倣い・習い)」、商いのやり方を身につけ、それらを市場の慣習として定着させていった。その一方、各自は市場の外にモデルを求めることで同種の製品に自分なりの「ずらし(変化)」を施して客を引き寄せる工夫をした。この「ならい(まね)」と「ずらし」のサイクルの連なりが市場空間に類似性と多様性を現出させ、これらの多元・多重的な連環が市場中で展開しつづけることでたえず多彩な変化が生じ、市場は活気に満たされてきた。「ならい」と「ずらし」の連環という視点は、ひとつの場所を共にした人びとのあいだにみられる共同性と個性の同時生成過程を考察する鍵を提供するだろう。
