This four year (April 2004-March 2008) research project on pragmatics in a film dialogue corpus was supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. It was an innovative attempt to systematize the collection and dissemination of pertinent information on films to teachers and researchers.Respondents to an online survey were asked to list the titles and characteristics of five feature films that they use in language teaching or learning. The survey was deployed on a very popular free access internet website for language teachers and learners. Based on frequency counts, a list of the top 50 most preferred films was assembled as a film corpus and the remaining analyses were restricted to data related to those films. Cross-tabulations of film title by pedagogical focus, respondent identity, country of residence and context of use were reported. In order to collect the target speech act (compliments/compliment responses), transcripts of dialogue for the top 40 films was assembled and searched for occurrences of the target speech act(e.g., compliments and compliment responses, or apologies)and they were coded according to an established coding scheme. The coded speech act data was then statistically compared with that of the Rose study and reported. Results of various analyses were reported at academic conferences and manuscripts of the reports were submitted for consideration in international peer-reviewed journals. This project has rectified a serious oversight in pedagogy by providing reliable, abundant information on the linguistic, pragmatic and other pedagogical features of the feature films most preferred by teachers and learners. This project has also assembled an enormous body of data that will fuel research that is directly relevant to language teaching and learning and will provide the model for an entire branch of pragmatic, pedagogic and linguistic research using feature film media as a corpus.
