The effects of alcohol and cigarette consumption on blood pressure and the renal function in middle-aged healthy Japanese men

The levels of serum creatinine concentration are lower in middle-aged male smokers. Cigarette smoking may significantly affect the circulatory system, causing increases in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and thus decreases in serum creatinine. A significant linear correlation between the increases in GFR and those in systemic blood pressure (BP) was observed only in smokers, but not in nonsmokers.The increases in GFR in smokers were suggested to be partly related to their increased fasting serum insulin levels. The high GFR and BP were shown to be the major factors related to increased urinary excretion of albumin in middle-aged male population, suggesting that smoking may cause the renal deterioration due to the elevated GFR and BP.
