Effects of genetic polymorphisms of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes on the accumulation of acetaldehyde in alcohol consumers from a general Japanese population

The associations of urinary ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations with the volume of alcohol consumed and the genotypes of ALDH2 and CYP2E1, and those with alcohol-related health effects, such as BP, serum hepatic enzymes, lipids, UA and glucose elevations, were analyzed in 200 middle-aged Japanese men randomly selected from a working population. Increases in alcohol consumption were significantly related to urinary ethanol concentrations, and urinary ethanol concentrations showed a strong correlation with urinary acetaldehyde concentrations. No significant effects of the genotypes of ALDH2 and CYP2E1 on those associations. Also, no significant effects of urinary acetaldehyde were observed on the alcohol-related health effects.
