平成17度は、まず街並みメッセージ論の既存研究成果に基づき、人の認識に基づく街路類型を導出した。その街路類型に基づき、繁華街の構成を取り扱う。まず全国の繁華街に存在する街路が、どの様な構成となっているか明らかにした。その結果、全国の繁華街構成に一定のパターンを見いだすことが出来た。これに関しては、別途の調査で、ある程度、明快な秩序を見いだすことにも成功している。また各繁華街の構成をエントロピー指標もしくは位相幾何学的な分析を行い、計量的な評価分析も試みた結果、魅力的であると定評のある繁華街は秩序を持ちつつ高いエントロピーを示していることまでが明らかになった。本年度(最終年度)は前年度に確認した繁華街構成の魅力に基づき、どのようにすれば、その魅力を高めていけるか、街路イメージに立ち戻り検討を行った。つまり、それぞれの魅力向上の為には、今まで街並みメッセージ論で対象としてきた「直接的記号」ではなく、現実的なまちづくりにおいて、改変費用も安く利用可能性の高い「婉曲的記号」に着目する必要がある。その「婉曲的記号」を整理の上再定義した。次に、街並みメッセージ論に基づく、街並みの規制誘導方策を提案し、その効果を、ケーススタディ箇所を選定した上で、フォトモンタージュを用いたSD法心理実験により導出し、ケース毎の比較を行った。これらの作業のために、調査・研究旅費を使用した。また調査結果をコンピュータに入力、フォトモンタージュ作成作業のための研究補助費を使用した。街並みとして、「婉曲的記号」が統一的化された場合、直接的記号と同程度の効果があることが明らかとなった。これらの分析・考察により、形態規制ではなく街並みメッセージ論に基づく情報量規制特に、「婉曲的記号」に基づく規制が現実的で有効であることを確認した。なお、この検討成果の研究発表を行った。
