2006年8月下旬から9月上旬にかけて約3週間に亘り、ペルー共和国カハマルカ県サン・パブロ郡に位置するパレドネス遺跡において発掘調査を実施した。同遺跡は、地表から建築物が観察でき、それらが1999、2000、2004年に発掘調査を実施したタンタリカ遺跡の建築物と類似した特徴を示していることから、チムー期(A.D.1200-1450)、インカ期(A-D.1450-1532)に属すると想定していた。しかし、発掘調査の結果、それよりも古いワリ期(A.D.600-900)の遺跡であることが判明した。ワリ期はペルー南高地のアヤクーチョ地方に位置するワリ遺跡を中心にワリ国家が台頭した時期であり、北はカハマルカ地方まで勢力を伸ばした。ワリの支配下で各地の民族集団が移動させられたが、そうした状況の下で建設されたのがパレドネスであると考えられる。遺跡の付近には植民地時代に採掘された鉱山があることから、鉱物採取活動を行った人々が生活していた場であると考えられる。またパレドネス遺跡では、チュルパと呼ばれる塔状の地上墳墓が確認された。チュルパはインカ期に広い範囲に分布するが、その起源は不明であったが、今回の発見により少なくともワリ期にまで遡ることが実証された。しかしカハマルカ地方チュルパがアンデス最古であるかどうかは今後他の地域のデータと照らし合わせて確認する必要がある。パレドネス遺跡ではカハマルカ文化カハマルカ中期のカオリン土器、海岸カハマルカと呼ばれる土器群、ペルー北海岸のモチェ文化の要素を備えた土器、またボリビアのティワナク文化の土器と類似した器形の土器などが確認されている。また、多数の金属製品も出土した。今後、出土遺物の詳細な分析を行い、パレドネス遺跡の性格を解明する。また、パレドネス遺跡が位置するヘケテペケ川中上流域には他にもチュルパを伴う遺跡が確認されている。平成19年度には周辺の遺跡分布調査を行い、パレドネス遺跡の位置づけを確認する予定である。
