项目摘要

今年度は、昨年度までに引き続き、日本古代における「文書主義(文字の連続体によって情報伝達・保管を行う政治・社会システム)」の実態追求を目的として、これまで本格的な研究が進んでいなかった点に関して、現存する文字資料の詳細な検討から、実態の解明を進めた。具体的には、古代の文字資料の現物を素材として、従来ほとんど検討されてこなかった、その機能・形態・行使方法といった諸要素の有機的な相互関連を追求してきた。こうした作業を基礎として、古代における情報伝達・保管が文字情報のみで完結していた訳でなく、音声と密接に相互依存しながら行われていた実態を明確化した。また、特に今年度は日本古代の史料を中心としながら、諸外国(たとえば古代中国)の事例などまで視野に入れつつ、精力的な検討を進めた。そのため、昨年度に引き続き、中国への調査旅行などを行い、文字資料の実見や事例の収集に努めた。また従来通り、国内の諸遺跡・資料所蔵機関における調査・研究も、精力的に行った。なお、以上の活動に加え、本年度は古代史料(典籍・文書)の現物を、主に国立歴史民俗博物館の館蔵品を中心として、紙質調査の専門家などと共同で子細に調査し、その特質をより明確に解明することに努めた。その成果は、今後、複数の論文や著書などによって順次公表していく予定であるが、内容は従来の古文書・古典籍に関する研究レベルを大きく凌駕するもので、研究史上、特筆して良いものと自負している。
