将棋ソフトは近年大幅に改善されてきた。早指しであればコンピュータが名人に勝つことも不可能ではない。本研究で開発した将棋ソフトTACOSは,研究開始当時,他の将棋ソフト同様,序盤や中盤などいくつかの致命的な欠点があった。本研究における様々な技術的進歩によってTACOSの強さは大幅に改善され人間を超えるほどに至った。顕著な進歩の例として,証明数を用いたAND/OR木探索があげられる。その他多くの改良により名人レベルに到達できた。
