ホスホリパーゼA_2(PLA_2)の活性化ペプチドであるメリチンを用い、痛み伝達の制御に重要な役割を果たす脊髄後角膠様質ニューロンのGABA およびグリシンを介する抑制性シナプス伝達がPLA2活性化により促進されることを発見した。前者の促進は興奮性シナプス伝達の促進を介したアセチルコリンやノルアドレナリンの作用による一方、後者の促進はグリシンシナプスでのアラキドン酸のリポキシゲナーゼ代謝物の作用によることを明らかにした。
