Wiseやclever類のいわゆるW類の形容詞について、(a)It was clever of John to punish the dog./(b)John was clever to punish the dog.の構文交替が観察される。本研究はこの現象をヴォイスの転換と捉え、(b)文を基本構文とし、(a)文は(b)のcleverにゼロの受動形態素が付加して派生した一種の受動形容詞文と分析した。(b)の主語Johnは動作主の役割を担い、(a)文ではこれが内項化されof句へと転換する。事実、動作主を表すbyがofに取って代わるという現象がある : It was clever by John to punish the dog.。以上本研究は形容詞の語彙意味、すなわち項構造からW類形容詞の構文交替を説明した。

Wise clever (a)It was clever of John to punish the dog./ (b)John was clever to punish the dog. This paper analyzes the basic structure of the adjective (a),(b),(c) and (d). (b)The subject of John's action is the subject of the sentence. It was clever by John to punish the dog. The above study explains the meaning of adjectives, the structure of adjectives and the alternation of adjectives.
