網膜色素上皮細胞においてADR-α2 mRNAの発現が認められた。VEGF mRNA及び蛋白質の発現はIL-1β刺激で増加し、クロニジンはその発現を有意に抑制した。その作用機序はp38MAPKとMEK1/2シウナル伝達系を介して抑制していることを明らかにした。Clonidineは脈絡膜新生血管膜あるいは血管新生を生じる、一部の眼疾患において有効である可能性が示唆された。
