本研究は、19世紀から20世紀へと移行する世紀末転換期から、1945年の第二次世界大戦終結までの期間を対象として、ヨーロッパで形成されたジャポニスムの内実を検討しつつ、その上で、日本人がジャポニスムをいかに受け入れ、そして、いかなる日本イメージを再構築したのかを調査・考察した。研究成果は大きく以下の4点にまとめられる。(1) ロンドンでの文献調査ロンドンの専門機関を利用して、1910年に開催された日英博覧会や、同時期のロンドン演劇界に深く関わった劇作家・舞踏研究家の坪内士行の足跡を調査し、1910年代の日英異文化交渉の一端を明らかにした。(2) ジャポニスムに関する日本語文献の収集と分析当時の日本人によるヨーロッパの旅行記やジャポニスム関連文献を収集することで、日露戦争(1904-1905年)前後から第二次世界大戦終結までの期間を対象として、通史的な観点から、ジャポニスム概念の質的な変化を析出した。(3) 1910年代のイギリス・ジャポニスムと日本人についての考察イギリスのジャポニスムと日本人の関係を探るために、特に1910年代に注目し、日英博覧会、演劇批評、文芸批評の観点から、日英異文化交渉の一面を明らかにした。具体的には、1910年代前後にイギリスを訪れた長谷川如是閑、坪内士行(作家・坪内逍遙の息子)、長谷川天渓らの異文化体験について考察を加えた。(4) 1930年代~1940年代の日仏文化交流についての考察1930年代から1940年代にかけてのパリにおける日本文学紹介や、異文化交渉の状況を調査した。具体的には、川路柳虹、松尾邦之助、坂本直道(坂本龍馬の末裔)、藤田嗣治について考察を加えた。
