本研究により得られた成果は、第1に1980年代以降アメリカ経済がグローバル経済に組み込まれる中で、コスト節約圧力を強めるアメリカ企業が行った医療給付改革の実態が、事例研究(General Motors社およびWal-Mart社)を通じて具体的に明らかとなった。第2にアメリカ産業構造・雇用構造の変化が、雇用主提供医療保険への加入資格を得られる割合や実際に加入する割合が雇用形態によって大きく異なることによって雇用主提供医療保険へも反映され、労働者の医療保障を不安定化させていることが論証された。
