ショウジョウバエ視覚中枢のメダラ神経節の発生過程を制御する分子機構を解析し、転写因子Drfの発現によって規定される神経細胞は約60種存在するメダラ神経細胞のうち9種の神経細胞を構成すること、高次の神経節であるロビュラの第1層および第4層特異的に投射すること、ロビュラに至る投射は幼虫期においてすでに見られることがわかった。また、神経細胞の種類と細胞体の位置には強い相関があることがわかった。
