本研究では、語彙識別に寄与する韻律的特徴を含む音声言語処理の発達過程について、脳活動の左右側性化の面から明らかにすることを目的とし、近赤外分光法を用いて日本人乳児のピッチアクセント及び長短母音処理における脳活動を測定した。その結果、ピッチアクセント処理では生後4ヶ月から10ヶ月にかけて、長短母音処理では10ヶ月から13ヶ月にかけて、それらに対する脳内処理機構が左優位となるように変容していくことが示された。
