今年度は特にベケットとジョイスとの関係に焦点をあてて「言語の起源」としての「幼児期」の形象を分析した。四・五月には昨年に引き続き文献学的調査をおこなった。特に「幼児」の形象に焦点を絞り、一九二〇年代前半から三〇年代後半にかけて書かれた両者の草稿・ノート・書簡・著作を比較検討した。その結果、両者がマウトナーの著作『言語批判に寄せて』とヴィーコの『新しい学問』に影響を受けていることが明らかにされた。六月から九月にかけてはマウトナー・ベケット・ジョイスの関係の解明に取り組んだ。文献学的作業によって「隠喩・擬人化批判」が三者に共通する問題意識として取り出された。マウトナーを参照することによって、ジョイスの『フィネガンズウェイク』言語の中心課題が「擬人化批判」として明確化され、それを「直接的言語」と評したベケットの意図も照射されることとなった。その研究成果の一部は七月に行われた日本サミュエル・ベケット研究会例会にて発表された。年度の後半ではヴィーコ『新しい学問』を読解し、ベケットとジョイスに共通する「隠喩・擬人化批判」がヴィーコの「幼児」や「子供」の形象に媒介されていることを解明した。ヴィーコは既知の隠喩を未知の対象に適用しようとする隠喩使用を「幼児」や「子供」の形象に代表させている。その能力は未発達であるため認識を獲得できず、むしろ認識に失敗する。これを出発点にしてジョイスとベケットのヴィーコ受容を比較分析し、二者の差異を解明した。この研究経過は第四回表象文化論研究集会において発表された。以て「幼児」形象の分析を介して、ベケット的なエクリチュールに向かう自伝文学の系譜の起源にヴィーコ的な幼児言語(認識の失敗)とマウトナー的な言語批判(行為としての言語使用)が見出されることとなった。
