A study of the acceptance of Western Culture in the early Meiji Era in Tsugaru.

本研究以卫理公会传教士的活动记录为依据，探讨日本近代化进程中，西学在东北地区的接受情况。在《科学研究资助计划》（C）中，作者对美国卫理公会的缩微胶片记录和一些档案馆的资料进行了研究。通过对德堡大学档案的调查和以传教士英若望的家乡伊利诺伊州为中心的实地考察，发现了有关英若望及其家人，以及在英若望的帮助下从津轻赴美留学的日本留学生的新资料和信息。这些材料可以描绘明治初期东北地区接受西方文化的新面貌。

This study focused on how Western learning was accepted in the Tohoku region in the process of modernization in Japan by using the records of the Methodist missionaries' activities. In this term of Grand-in-Aid for Scientific Research(C), the author has conducted research of the microfilm records of the Methodist church and the materials stored in some Archives in the USA. By investigating the archives in DePauw University and the field survey centering on the hometown of missionary John Ing in the Illinois States, the author found new materials and information on John Ing and his family, and the Japanese foreign students who studied in the USA from Tsugaru with the assistance of John Ing. These materials can depict the new aspects of the acceptance of western culture in the Tohoku region in the early Meiji era.
