Samoan overseas migrants form their own communities mainly in the circum-Pacific cities and their total population outnumbers now the Samoan one at home. Their customary ceremonial exchange based on the principle of reciprocity which is still held often in overseas and at home as well causes cash flows from overseas to home, while the participation to ceremonial exchange has come to be a sign of identity and the ceremonies are burden to many of the migrants. On the other hand, migrant artists are critical to the ceremonial exchange and they are trying to create their own identity by their art instead of participating ceremonial exchange.

萨摩亚海外移民主要在环太平洋城市形成了自己的社区，他们的总人口现在超过了国内的萨摩亚人。他们基于互惠原则的传统仪式交换仍然经常在海外和国内举行，导致现金从海外流向国内，而参与仪式交换已成为身份的标志，仪式对许多移民来说是负担。另一方面，流动艺术家对仪式交流至关重要，他们试图通过自己的艺术来创造自己的身份，而不是参与仪式交流。
