本研究の目的は、マクシミリアン1世時代に大国である神聖ローマ帝国からその支配下にあったスイス盟約者団が、如何にして「独立」路線を希求し、如何にして中世末期・近世初期という紛争期に再度併合されること無く生き残れたのか、また国王のような頂点に立つ存在を持たず、複数の都市による緩い連合体であったにも関わらず、如何にして一つの政治体として活動しえたのかを検討することにある。それに伴い不可欠となってくるのが、盟約者団全体の方針を決め、緩い連合体をまとめる役割を担っていた唯一の機関であるスイス盟約者団代表者会議と、そこに出席する各都市(邦)の代表である使節の分析である。前年度は盟約者団内部での関係性に焦点をあてていたが、今年度はそれに加え、比較史研究を可能にすることを念頭に視点を外に向けることも心がけた。1.史料分析スイス盟約者団の各10都市の個々の派遣使節のプロフィールを、対象年代のみならず、その前後数年を複数の史料を用いることで丹念に追っていった結果、各使節の政治的立場の背景、また都市内、盟約者団内、更に国外諸勢力とのネットワークを明らかにした。これらを前年度に解明した都市同士のネットワーク分析に加えることで、これまで特殊な存在として孤立しがちであったスイス史の西洋史における立ち位置を明確にし、広域ヨーロッパ的な視座を提供することができると自負している。2.二次文献読解昨年度の在外史料調査で入手した二次文献の分析も同時に行った。地域史研究だけあって、細かな情報が入手でき、上記の史料分析において大いに助けとなった。
