The aim of this research is to investigate how emphasis is expressed by means of intonation in languages of different types; that is, tone languages, a pitch accent language, and a stress accent language. Examination of acoustic phonetic data has demonstrated that whereas the accent languages employ intonation to express the emphasis, the tone languages do not. Furthermore, the pitch pattern of the combined words in utterance should not be regarded as mere coarticulative adjustment, but as a dynamic pattern assigned to each combination of tonal units that forms a morphosyntactic unit.

本研究的目的是探讨在不同类型的语言中，即声调语言、音高重音语言和重音重音语言中，重音是如何通过语调来表达的。对声学语音数据的研究表明，重音语言使用语调来表达强调，而声调语言不使用语调。此外，组合词在话语中的音高模式不应被视为仅仅是协同发音的调整，而应被视为分配给形成形态句法单位的每个音调单位组合的动态模式。
