This study investigates the utility of corporate apologia as one of crisismanagement strategies in Japan. Scholars of corporate apologia tend to focus on how corporations in the midst of public relations crises respond to criticism in defense of their carefully crafted images in order to deal with the problem of guilt and ethics. The author views corporate apologia as one possible set of crisis communication strategies, and develops diagnostic theories that aim at making improvements by guiding practice in a determinate direction and by providing a basis for criticizing practice. The effective corporate apologia taken by Japanese corporations largely depends on the following abilities of corporate executives;(1)their adequate reality constructions on the situations and(2)their public speeches and behaviors in accordance with Aristotle's ethics and rhetoric.

本研究旨在探讨日本企业道歉作为危机管理策略之一的效用。研究企业辩解的学者们倾向于关注处于公共关系危机中的企业如何回应批评，以捍卫自己精心打造的形象，从而处理内疚和道德问题。作者将企业道歉视为一种可能的危机沟通策略，并发展了诊断理论，旨在通过指导实践向一定的方向发展并为批评实践提供基础来改进。日本企业能否有效地进行企业道歉，主要取决于企业高管的以下能力：（1）对现实情况进行充分的现实建构;（2）按照亚里士多德的伦理学和修辞学进行公开演讲和行为。
