A Theoretical Study of the Japanese Conception of 'Harmonious Co-Existence' (Kyosei)

本研究的主要目的是在关注当代西方自由主义民族主义和多元文化主义政治理论的发展趋势的情况下，探索并形成一个适当的“kyosei”概念。“京城”是日本人推崇的一种流行的社会理想，意为“不同民族、不同文化、不同民族的和谐共处”。如果我们在日本文化资源的基础上，成功地阐明了“京城”的概念，我们就可以从这个概念中得出令人信服的论据，证明各种社会理想的价值，如“人权”、“国际理解”和“平等待遇”，这些都是日本人普遍容易接受的。在这项研究中，我们的目的是考虑如何在日本社会的学校教育和社会教育中解释这些规范性的社会理想，并与“kyosei”的概念相联系。

The main aim of this research project is to explore and formulate an adequate conception of 'kyosei', with attention to the trends of the contemporary Western political theories of liberal nationalism and multiculturalism. 'Kyosei' is a popular social ideal that Japanese people tend to highly evaluate, meaning to be 'harmonious co-existence of different people, cultures and nations'. If we succeed in articulating a notion of 'kyosei' based on Japanese cultural resources, we can derive persuasive arguments for the value of various social ideals such as 'human rights', 'international understanding,' and 'equal treatment' from that notion, which are readily acceptable to Japanese people generally. In this study, we aim to consider how these normative social ideals should be explained in school education and social education in Japanese society, in association with a notion of 'kyosei'.
