项目摘要

本研究課題は現代西欧軍事博物館の担う国民統合機能の理論的特徴を明らかにしつつ、西欧国家のうちイギリス、ドイツ、オーストリアの事例を比較考量しながら、その実相に迫ろうとするところにある。令和４年度はそのための予備作業として、政治学をはじめ歴史学、博物館学、軍事史学などの資料を幅広く収集して分析する作業をとおして、現代西欧軍事博物館を支えているロジックを解明する作業を行った。そのうえで、かかるロジックを反映した（反映していない）具体的な事例として、ウィーンにあるオーストリア軍事史博物館に着目し、同博物館に赴いて取材及び資料収集を実施するとともに、軍事博物館から読み取られうる「国家の自画像」（見せたい国家像）と「国民の肖像」（望ましい国民像）のありようについて考察した。その結果、今日の国民意識形成をはかるうえでも、第二次世界大戦の歴史認識が今もって非常に大きな影響を及ぼしていることが明らかになった。第二次世界大戦の被害者にして加害者であるオーストリアの場合、そうした微妙な「立ち位置」のゆえに、この戦争の記憶は軍事博物館の描く歴史物語においては実に巧妙にはぐらかされているのである。直近の戦争の記憶が国民意識形成のベースとなるかわりに、この博物館では現オーストリア国家が否定したはずのハープスブルク家のオーストリアの郷愁に訴えかける展示がその役割を担っており、ヨーロッパにおける歴史認識の複雑さを端的に表現している。こうしたケースは現代史に暗い陰を持つその他の国々（スペインなど）にも予想される事態であり、国民意識のあり方のひとつのマスターピースたりうるものとして非常に興味深い。
